HYROX is a global fitness race that combines both running & functional workout stations, where participants run 1km, followed by 1 functional workout station, repeated eight times. There’s a mixture of cardio work (SkiErgs and rowers), strength challenges (sled pushes and pulls and farmer’s carries), a CrossFit staple (wall balls), and flat-out punishments (walking sandbag lunges and burpee broad jumps). The exercises are meant to be approachable for all gym-goers, but they’re tough. The average Hyrox finishing time is about an hour and a half.

This year the Sydney Hyrox event takes place on the 5th July, which as fate would have it is the date of my 5 year remission. I had been waiting for the right time and event to challenge myself and raise money for Head and Neck Cancer Australia, a cause deeply close to my heart, and so it seems Hyrox Sydney was meant to be! I am signed up for the mens singles event and my wife Katey and sister in law Kristina joined forces and signed up as a women’s doubles team. The training has been tough but we have been motivating each other along the way. I am so proud of the commitment we have all given to throwing ourselves into this challenge and raising money, something I have dreamt of doing for such a long time.
